The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) says that every 18 minutes an older adult (aged 65+) is treated in the Emergency Department for injuries related to falling. Every 35 minutes someone in this population dies from their injuries. Among the elderly, falls are the leading cause of injury deaths. And, more than 90% of hip fractures are related to falls.
Falls in nursing homes are more common than in the community. The CDC states that an average nursing home with 100 beds reports 100-200 falls per year. And, approximately 1800 older adults die each year from fall related injuries while in the nursing home.
There are some steps we can take to reduce the risk of falls. Regular exercise can help to increase strength and improve balance. Make an appointment with an eye doctor to have vision checked. Reduce hazards within the home ie: Remove throw rugs or apply non-slip material to the backing. Make sure electrical wires are secured to the wall and out of the way. Make sure handrails are intact and sturdy to stairs inside and outside. Install handrails in toilet and shower areas. Use shower chair with non-slip material applied to seat. Use a non-slip mat in tub/shower areas and on the floor if there is no carpeting.
Also, keep in mind, sometimes a fall can be related to a medical problem such as pain, urinary tract infection, or increased confusion to name a few. So be sure to consult with your loved ones doctor.
